How gratitude rewires your brain
✨ Your brain loves it when you're grateful!
Here's why:
1️⃣It makes you feel good - When we think about what we're grateful for, dopamine and serotonin are released which brings a feeling of contentment. Gratitude also reduces the amount of cortisol (the stress hormone) in our bodies and activates the parasympathetic nervous system which helps us to feel calm.
2️⃣We become more aware of the good stuff - Our brains are wired to look for danger or problems to solve (negativity bias). It makes sense - for, y’know, survival - but not a great way to live these days. Focusing on gratitude helps us look for more things to be grateful for, and filter out that negativity. It's selective attention in action (Baader-Meinhff phenomenon - also known as the red car effect, we see what we look for).
3️⃣We create new neural pathways - It's not just in the moment that these changes have effect. As we practice gratitude more frequently, the neural pathways strengthen and it becomes easier to think positively over time.
✨Yup, your brain loves it! Would you give it a try?
